OakParkState Senators Kimberly A. Lightford and Don Harmon are pleased to announce $400,000 in state funding for the Park District of Oak Park's continued renovation of Maple Park.

"Parks are an invaluable community resource," Lightford said. "They encourage our children to play outside and lead active lives, and they give adults the opportunity to get healthy exercise."

Specifically, renovations include the upgrade of the existing ball fields and play equipment and creation of new junior-size grid fields, a picnic shelter, rock climbing structures and a continuous walking path within the park. The park district will also add pickle ball lines to the existing tennis courts for multi-use play and enhance park landscaping.

classroomState Senator Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood) believes that Illinois schools need to seriously revise their policies on suspending and expelling students, and she's sponsoring legislation to set the process in motion. Her plan, Senate Bill 3004, passed the Education Committee and will be considered by the full Senate.

"Pulling children out of the classroom doesn't help them learn, and too many of them don't even see it as punishment," Lightford said. "Suspension or expulsion should only be used as a last resort and only in cases where students are a danger to others or seriously disrupt the learning process."

Recently, State Senator Kimberly Lightford (D- Maywood) hosted a senior forum at West Suburban Senior Services. Representatives from the Department on Aging and the Attorney General's office were present to provide seniors with information about different services offered by the state and a presentation on how to recognize fraud and scams.

"It's important that seniors know what con artists are doing so they aren't taken advantage of," said Senator Lightford. "We need to keep seniors informed about fraudulent practices so they don't fall victim to scams."

After a Senate hearing this morning laid out the stark fiscal realities facing the state of Illinois, State Senator Kimberly A. Lightford said that Illinois' children can't suffer any more education budget cuts.

"Enough is enough," said the Maywood Democrat. "Earlier this year, the State Board told us that our schools need another billion dollars to perform their basic function. Now, the Board is telling us that the reality next year will be nearly $1 billion in cuts. This situation is unreal. Do we want to sentence an entire generation to failure?"
