State Senator Kimberly A. Lightford's town hall meeting on school discipline was a great success with well over 100 area residents present.

Lightford brought Shawn Brown of Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE), Jenine Wehbeh of Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, Olga Pribyl of Equip for Equality, Diane Rutledge of the Large Unit District Association, Karen VanAusdal of Chicago Public Schools, Alison Maley of the Illinois Statewide Management Alliance, Peg Agnos of the Legislative Education Network, and Rebecca Levin of Strengthening Chicago's Youth/ Ann & Robert Lurie Children's Hospital to Proviso Math and Science Academy to answer questions about the changing path of school discipline.

Senator Lightford believes that Illinois schools need to seriously revise their policies on suspending and expelling students, and she's sponsoring legislation to set the process in motion. Her plan, Senate Bill 3004, passed the Education Committee and will be considered by the full Senate.

"Pulling children out of the classroom doesn't help them learn, and too many of them don't even see it as punishment," Lightford said. "Suspension or expulsion should only be used as a last resort and only in cases where students are a danger to others or seriously disrupt the learning process."
